The Residencies
Hands working the soil of the Montado

The artistic residencies and exhibitions of Sintropias welcome practices that place animals, plants, insects, minerals and microorganisms as protagonists, exploring inter-species perspectives and recognising the essential role of non-human agents in the well-being of our shared planet. We also value situated artistic narratives, capable of informing more holistic, ethical and sustainable relationships with the world.

The residencies will take place at Quinta da Cinzeira, on the outskirts of Évora. This centuries-old estate, where oyas or ollas — an ancestral irrigation technique using ceramic pots — have been found, is thought to have been home to several farming families between the 17th and 19th centuries. Between 1980 and 2018 it was used for the production of cork, wine and cattle.

Since 2019, the family has been working to regenerate the depleted soil of the Quinta through vegetable gardens, syntropic agriculture and the removal of cattle, hosting horses and sheep from the neighbourhood in rotation across the land.
